Marcos's Story

Military MARCOS BERNARDEZ JR. CTMC(SW/AW), USN Enlisted in the Navy on Oct 13, 1980 and attended Basic Training in San Diego, CA. After Basic training he completed Basic Electricity and Electronics (BEE) school in San Diego and Cryptologic Technician Maintenance (CTM) “A” school in Pensacola, Florida. Upon completion of “A” school he was advanced to Third Class Petty Officer in 1981. He transferred back to San Diego to attended Mod 28 teletype “C” school. His first assignment was in May 1982 at NSGA Adak, Alaska, where he worked in the Communications Maintenance Shop. He worked section duty, learned to become an outdoorsman and learned how to increase his consumption of alcoholic spirits. In May 1983, he was excited on his transferred to NAVCAMS EASTPAC Wahiawa, Hawaii where he served two years in the Teletype Maintenance Shop. He soon learned the true art in taking apart a fully functional piece of teletype and bringing it back to life. The tour in Adak never took him that far, but he was now a true TTY tech. During this tour he advanced to Second Class Petty Officer and quickly became a section leader. This was the beginning of many leadership roles to come. In August 1985, he reported to NSGA Ft. Meade, Maryland. He was assigned the Equipment Prep shop for nine months and later to the Tactical Support to Military Operations (TSMO). After six months of equipment familiarization he was promoted to team leader. He lead a highly qualified team of six Joint Forces team members to provide secure communications in 13 contingencies throughout the world in support of Unit Commanders. It was at Ft. ary 1990 where he advanced to First Class Petty Officer. He became the ERRTS Coordinator, Automated Information Systems division Leading Petty Officer and later became the Leading Petty Officer of the Communications Maintenance Repair division. From March 1993 to February 1996 Chief Bernardez was assigned to NCTAMS EASTPAC Wahiawa, Hawaii. During his tour he worked as Maintenance Department Workcenter Supervisor, Maintenance Department Training Petty Officer, NSGD Wahiawa Career Counselor and Command Career Counselor. During this tour he was voted as President of the First Class Association and deployed on the USS Blue Ridge for a three month deployment. The seed was planted and the itch for going to sea was greater than ever. The late Detailer Chief Madrinski granted him his which with orders to Combat Direction Finding School. He transferred in February 1996 to the Combat Direction Finding “C” school in Pensacola Florida where he graduated and received orders to the USS Kearsarge (LHD-3). During his tenure he was the Leading Petty Officer in Ships Signals Exploitation Space (SSES), spearheading two successful deployments in support of humanitarian efforts in Cierra Leon, West Africa in 1997 and the Kosovo Liberation in 1999. During the 1999 deployment he was selected for Chief Petty Officer in September 99. Chief “B” transferred in Dec 99 to NSGA Norfolk and held three managerial positions. The first position was as the Maintenance Supply Division Chief, second was as the Maintenance Division Chief and last one was as the Installations Division Chief in the Fleet Electronic Shop (FES). This last tour was the most challenging and self satisfying of them all. Retired 08 November 2002, after 22 years.
